In the long battle against illness, “home” is always the warmest haven. As they return home, each family shares their heartfelt stories and touching moments during their stay.
1.Hanson’s Family: Finding Comfort in Community
Hanson, a 15-year-old boy and the eldest in a family of five, was diagnosed with leukemia last year. Following a referral from the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital social worker, Hanson and his family stayed at RMHC.
During his stay, Hanson found respite from long hospital days by participating in RMHC activities, while his family cherished the opportunity to be together. Hanson’s mom shared, “RMHC gave us a safe and supportive place to stay. It felt like a little neighborhood where we could connect with other families and share our ups and downs.” Hanson is now ready to return home, with his family expressing heartfelt thanks for the care and support they received.
2.Camila’s Story: The Optimistic Little Warrior
Camila was diagnosed with acute leukemia at the age of three. Living in the North District and facing the high hygiene requirements during treatment, her parents felt immense pressure. With the help of a social worker, they quickly moved into the Kwun Tong Ronald McDonald House.
“This is the safest place where our family can stay together without being separated,” Camila’s mother said with gratitude.
During their one-year stay, Camila’s family actively participated in House activities, becoming familiar faces in the community. Now fully recovered and back home, Camila often asks, “When can we go back to that ‘home away from home’?” The family has also joined the Love Companion Program, hoping to use their experience to encourage and support other families.
3.Sophie’s Family: Strength and Positivity
Diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, Sophie, a bright and optimistic little girl, didn’t let her illness dull her spirit. She continued to wear her school uniform to hospital visits, maintaining a sense of normalcy in her life.
During her treatment, Sophie bravely underwent an MRI without anesthesia, staying completely still for 45 minutes. Her small acts of courage and humor—like keeping the earplugs as a souvenir—brought light to challenging moments. Sophie even designed a unique T-shirt for the RMHC team to show her gratitude. Sophie and her family are now heading home, carrying with them the love and support they found at RMHC.
4.Tsun Yu’s Family: 800 Kilometers of Hope
When one-month-old Tsun Yu developed a persistent cough in Hainan, his family began an eight-month medical journey spanning 800 kilometers—from local hospitals to Shanghai and finally to Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. Diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease, he underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
After his discharge, Tsun Yu and his mom stayed at RMHC, where the medical respite suite provided a safe environment for his recovery. “I was most moved by being able to stay by his side while preparing meals,” his mom shared. Beyond the physical care, RMHC became an emotional support network, with other parents sharing their experiences and encouragement. Now, Tsun Yu’s family is ready to return home, filled with hope and gratitude.
5.Pui Yu’s Family: A Home Full of Love
After spending over a year at RMHC, Pui Yu’s family has returned home, ready to start a new chapter. “At first, we had doubts about staying here. But the staff were incredibly warm and supportive, helping us adjust quickly,” said Pui Yu’s father.
During their time at RMHC, the family forged meaningful bonds with other residents, organizing activities like baking mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival and visiting Cha Kwo Ling Promenade for Halloween. These shared moments helped ease the stress of caregiving and created treasured memories. RMHC became more than a shelter—it became a home where love and connection thrived.
