At the age of four, Esther was diagnosed with leukemia, her family was plunged into darkness. Facing the agony of chemotherapy, the excruciating pain of lumbar punctures, and countless sleepless nights… At their most desperate moment, a warm harbor lifted them with hope. Today, the recovered Esther, with her short hair and bright smile, shows us: love creates miracles.
The Unexpected Battle Against Leukemia
At just four and a half years old, the once lively and energetic Esther suddenly developed a persistent high fever. A bone marrow test shattered the family’s peace—acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “We couldn’t accept it. There’s no family history, and she was always so healthy…” Mom Ceci said tearfully. Intensive chemotherapy caused Esther’s hair to fall out and her face to swell. The side effects of the medication tripled her appetite, and her emotions became volatile. What broke her parents’ hearts the most was the lumbar puncture treatment: “Even adults might struggle to endure this pain, but she bravely held back her trembling and said, ‘It doesn’t hurt,’ even smiling to comfort us.”
A Ray of Light at Ronald McDonald House Hong Kong
Living in Sha Tau Kok at the time, the couple faced a grueling four-hour round trip to the children’s hospital daily. Ceci recalled those dark days: “Her little sister felt neglected, and her baby brother was born prematurely while I was rushing back to Esther’s side.” After being referred by a medical social worker, they moved into the Ronald McDonald House in Kwun Tong—a “home away from home” that became their turning point. Other parents would help Ceci with groceries, cooking, or looking after the kids, and Esther’s younger sister could stay with them during holidays, reuniting the family.
