Message from the CEO

As we step into a new season filled with hope, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge two significant occasions: International Women’s Day and Easter. These moments provide us with an opportunity to reflect on our values, celebrate kindness, and foster a sense of unity within our community.

In honor of International Women’s Day, we have invited three women – a mother of one of our families, a volunteer, and a staff member – to share their stories that remind us of their dedicated and selfless roles in the family, community, and workplace.

Easter is a time of hope and renewal. One of the most meaningful ways to embody the spirit is to engage in charitable giving. Be it volunteering or simply a donation will make a positive impact on our children and their families.

The stories featured in this issue highlight the fulfilments, challenges and resilience of individuals who have overcome obstacles and made significant impacts in their lives. Their stories ignite meaningful conversations that teach us the importance of empathy and understanding; most importantly, allow us to work towards a more compassionate world.

Wah Wah

Wah Wah was diagnosed with gastrointestinal hemangioma of tract when she was 5 months old. When Wah Wah was in the hospital for the first two months, her mom was anxious and worried and her dad could not go to work. The couple had to shuttle between their Tai Po home and the hospital every single day. Wah Wah’s sister, Kwan Kwan was nine years old by then. She felt more like an orphan as her parents’ attention was all on Wah Wah. With the existence of the Ronald McDonald House (RMH), their family life and relationship turned normal and better.

My son Ho Hin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma when he wasn't even one year old. I needed to start a long journey of treatment with him on my own because at that time my husband was working in the Mainland. Thankfully a social worker concerned our case and referred us to move into the Ronald McDonald Charities House^®. Afterwards, my son suffered from another illness, and we moved into the House again.

Life is full of adversity. My two lovely daughters suffered from Thalassemia, which made me live in hardship for ten years in order to take care of them. Fortunately, we got chances to accommodate at the Ronald McDonald House^®. It not only helped me take care of my daughters but also giving me a chance to talk to its staff members and volunteers when I was depressed and doing physical exercise to relax. Luckily, the pair eventually recovered.
