If we regard sickness is a challenge, then Ronald McDonald House is a big tree, warm harbour and permanent shelter which accompany every sick kids and their parents to fight against illness!
Tam Wai Lin

Firstly, I thank for Ronald McDonald House has granted me the 10 Years Volunteer Service Award. That recalls my son incident happened 15 years ago: he was very sick and stayed in hospital, was referred by hospital to stay in Ronald McDonald House. I was full of worries when moved in. Lately, I felt the House was my second home. The parents here were helpful, and we had lots of sharing and support. Kids were playing happily all together and I was moved by their joy. Staffs gave lots of care and I was so touch with their greetings. 10 months later we moved back home. Once my son’s condition became stable, I decided to start volunteering. It has been 10 years since then, during the service and co-op, I learn how to communicate, how to deal with people, be understanding and acceptance. It is grateful that I can help other people, and it gives me lots of joy. Last but not the least, I thank Ronald McDonald House for giving me the valuable opportunities to share my feeling with you. Good Health and Happy Forever.
Durjoy

Durjoy – a name that symbolizes the invincible. This name belongs to a strong 5-year-old boy who has always been fighting with challenges in his life.
Born in Bengal, Durjoy is the only grandson in his family and will inherit the family’s legacy when he grows up. Such status has aroused the jealousy of Durjoy’s aunt, who only has two daughters.

One day, when Durjoy’s mother was not at home, the auntie deliberately splashed some corrosive liquid at him. His mouth, neck, chin and throat were seriously burned, and his tongue was corroded to the size of a thumbnail. At that time, Durjoy was only 49 days old! He could no longer speak, laugh, and eat, and could only live on nutrient milk fed through a nasogastric tube.

Durjoy’s father had used up all his savings to save him, but there was no improvement for his poor condition. Fortunately, with the help of a local charity organization, Durjoy was sent to Hong Kong for orthopaedic surgery, and stayed at the Ronald McDonald House near the hospital.

In a short period of three months since he arrived in Hong Kong, Durjoy had been sent to the Intensive Care Unit for three times. As Durjoy’s mouth was re-opened by the surgeon from 1 cm to 4 cm, he could finally say “Daddy! Mummy!” – a moment his worn-out parents had been waiting for five years. They could no longer hold back their tears.

Owing to Durjoy’s young age, his doctor advised that the next operation could only be done two years later. However, all his parents’ savings have been spent, and the local organization which funded the family’s first visit would not be able to fund their second trip either. It remains unknown whether Durjoy will be able to come again for future treatments.

Facing the uncertain future, Durjoy’s parents have only one wish: that Durjoy can smile again!
Their wish has come true – they saw the smile on Durjoy’s face one day when he was having a good time playing with volunteers and other children at the Ronald McDonald House. Durjoy has left his home town and come all the way to Hong Kong to operate. To him, greeting and care from fellow sick children are huge support and encouragement.

Although Durjoy will still have to undergo a series of treatments, he will, just as his name be brave about the challenges and defeat them. Because in this “home”, he has found love!

Wah Wah was diagnosed with gastrointestinal hemangioma of tract when she was 5 months old. When Wah Wah was in the hospital for the first two months, her mom was anxious and worried and her dad could not go to work. The couple had to shuttle between their Tai Po home and the hospital every single day. Wah Wah’s sister, Kwan Kwan was nine years old by then. She felt more like an orphan as her parents’ attention was all on Wah Wah. With the existence of the Ronald McDonald House (RMH), their family life and relationship turned normal and better.

My son Ho Hin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma when he wasn't even one year old. I needed to start a long journey of treatment with him on my own because at that time my husband was working in the Mainland. Thankfully a social worker concerned our case and referred us to move into the Ronald McDonald Charities House®. Afterwards, my son suffered from another illness, and we moved into the House again.

Life is full of adversity. My two lovely daughters suffered from Thalassemia, which made me live in hardship for ten years in order to take care of them. Fortunately, we got chances to accommodate at the Ronald McDonald House®. It not only helped me take care of my daughters but also giving me a chance to talk to its staff members and volunteers when I was depressed and doing physical exercise to relax. Luckily, the pair eventually recovered.
